If you want to go to college you have to be a self-advocate!  While the college admissions and financial aid processes can be long and complicated, students have a ton of resources available to them.  All you have to do is make sure you fight for these opportunities.  The best thing you can do is to stand up for yourself!

I don’t mean that you need to get to college by your own efforts only.  You are not in this alone.  If you keep your eyes open, parents, teachers, counselors, or community members (and definitely the KH2GO Ambassadors) want you to graduate from college and are willing to help you get there.  The best thing you can do is to tell these important adults your goals and, when it comes time, to ask them for their support.  At least some of them, and probably most of them, will go out of their way to help you, but how will they know if you need help if you don’t ask?  Students must be willing to stand up for themselves to get the attention they deserve from their counselors, parents, or teachers.  Don’t be afraid to tell them what you need from them and why.  It will make all the difference to you!  Being assertive can be hard, but it will pay off greatly for you!  This will make you a self-advocate.

College life has a lot to do with growing up and taking new responsibilities.  In many ways getting into college is the first of these new responsibilities.  In the end, if you want to graduate from college (and you should want to), then you have to make sure that you get there.  Be a self-advocate and take control of your own future!

I’m not the only Ambassador who thinks this is important…

Your absolutely right Carl! One of the biggest adjustments in college is learning to be a self-advocate. Professors will not nag you about turning in homework. If you don’t show up for class they won’t ask where you were. Therefore, being responsible is very important. There are many adults and even older college students that are willing to help you but you have to seek them out. This can be a little intimidating but taking initiative will only make adults want to help you more!
